The assumption is that a career in science offers less money but more fre!om in what you do, while the opposite is true for a career in industry. This is a trade-off with clear alternatives: for each individual, you can figuratively imagine the payoff function depending on these two factors, and each person chooses one of the two options bas! on which factor is more important to them.
